English As It Should Be

We know what we are, but know not what we may be.

- William Shakespeare

I am an experienced English teacher and SQA marker tutoring in Scotland. I have experience tutoring for homeschooling (supporting pupils who are not in mainstream education for a variety of reasons) and traditional sessions to support classroom learning.

"I always looked forward to English and not only enjoyed myself but really took in what was being taught. You always had time for us, no matter what."

Experience

I have taught English in schools and tutored for over ten years. I have been both a classroom teacher and PT English over my career. I believe in aspirational teaching that pushes young people to achieve their best. I aim to create a positive environment during my sessions that focuses on mindful teaching and learning. Helping young people to achieve a solid understanding of English so that they have the opportunity to succeed in life is my goal. I have experience of working with a variety of children including those who experience barriers to learning such as dyslexia.

Testimonials

I have known Kim Allison since 2014, when she became my English teacher at Deans Community High School. As a class teacher she was engaging and innovative and some of the methods that I learned in her class I have taken with me to University.

Kim provided useful critique and encouraging feedback. Her approach to revision was creative and fun and challenged us all to explore and analyse our texts in our own way. Our class subsequently got excellent results in the exam.

Kim was supportive and approachable both in person and by email. She was down to earth and took an interest in us as individuals and celebrated our successes with us.

I know that Kim will be an excellent tutor because she is enthusiastic, encouraging, creative, innovative, engaging, patient, supportive, approachable, friendly, inspiring and fun. She has the ability to recognise and nurture individuals’ strengths and talents and, will not only ensure that young people are successful in obtaining academic qualifications but, will provide them with the self-belief, creativity and confidence that will guide them though life.
— Enya Wolfe, Student of Deans Community High School (National 5)
Kim is helping my daughter prepare for her National 5 English exam. Kim has made such a difference in a short space of time. She is very supportive and has given my daughter the confidence to believe in herself and what she can achieve.
— Annaliese Currie, Mother
Before I was introduced to Kim I had absolutely no confidence in my ability to do well in English. I was constantly told that I wasn’t intelligent enough and I would never achieve more than a Standard Grade 3. This made me really dislike the subject, and I dreaded it every day.

I decided that before going into Intermediate 2 I needed a tutor and that is when Kim became my tutor. The first day I met her, I knew that she was going to be a great teacher for me; I immediately felt comfortable with her. With the help of Kim I went on to achieve an A in my intermediate 2 English, with the highest mark in the school, and a B in Higher.

Kim has given me an incredible amount of confidence which I never knew I had as she believed in me from the beginning. She has changed my whole outlook on the subject and has had a massive impact on my schooling life. Kim will make you believe that anyone is capable. I seriously cannot thank her enough.
— Sophie McGraw, Tutoring Pupil (Int 2 and Higher)
Kim is a highly creative and caring teacher. It matters to her what the individual feels; it matters to her what level the individual achieves; it matters to her that each individual is special, unique and can be encouraged to lift their sights.
— Keith Hay, Colleague

Cancellation and Termination Policies

Information

I tutor through all school holidays so sessions will continue throughout the year including through holidays. If I am taking Annual Leave I will notify you in advance. If you should choose to take the summer holidays off then a £20 retainer fee will be charged to hold your child’s place till August.

Cancellation

Lessons cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice will result in full tuition fees being charged (unless extenuating circumstances are made clear). If I am obliged to cancel a lesson, the lesson will be rearranged for a time that is mutually convenient for both parties.

Termination of Lessons

Lessons will continue until a mutually agreed termination date. Both parties may reserve the right to terminate lessons with two weeks’ notice should they no longer be considered beneficial.

Late Payments

Please be aware that a late payment fee of £40 has been introduced. Should regular late payments become an issue then sessions may be terminated. Thank you for your understanding.
